I don't know what happened this year. I typically go to see every movie that is Oscar nominated in one way or another, but I just haven't made it this year. I think I'll still have time to get to The Last King of Scotland and I'm really going to try to also get to Letters From Iwo Jima, if I can. Clint's films typically bore me to tears, but I was intrigued by LfIJ. At least this one doesn't have Swank in it. I'm feeling a lot of pressure to actually see The Last King of Scotland since I'm about 90% sure that Whitaker will win for it. I've heard he's fantastic in the movie.
Here's the thing: I can't get myself to see Babel. I'm sure it's good and all, but the first time I saw the trailer, I rolled my eyes. I couldn't even tell you why I did. Something about it was just...familiar and boring. Then I
read this and realized what it was that was bugging me subconsciously -- the Babel/Crash connection. Babel was immediately bringing Crash back to my brain and, lordy, I HATED Crash. I could talk about the crappiness of Crash for HOURS, and something about the Babel advertisements just screamed Crash to me. Anyway, she seems to feel the way that I do about Crash, which makes me think Babel would be a bit more tolerable, so I've added it to my Netflix. The very thought of watching it makes me tired, but I will soldier on.
I loved The Queen, I liked Little Miss Sunshine, but I loved, loved, loved The Departed. I loved The Departed so much that I didn't even notice how freaking long it was -- the pacing was so well done. I'm a little confused as to why Leo was nominated for Blood Diamond rather than for The Departed though. Any thoughts? I've been out of the loop, so I'm guessing there's some reason that makes sense? I thought Leo was
amazing in The Departed so I'm' bummed to see him nominated for the movie that I won't see until it's on DVD. I've been on Team DiCaprio and Team Scorsese forever, so I'll surely be rooting for both of them even though I know that Whitaker will clean up and I'll probably be stuck watching Clint accept his award as I yawn and get ready for bed. God forbid, someone get rewarded for making a film that is entertaining as hell. Scorsese should have won years ago for Goodfellas anyway (only one of the best movies made, like,
EVER) and I'm kind of getting used to him losing. It's comforting, like a warm blanket. I'm all Team Departed, but I had to pull out this icon, because Wahlberg winning best supporting actor would make me so happy it would be ridiculous. As someone from MA with a few family members who are staties and Bostonians, the guy was freaking perfection. If you had told me back in '92 that I'd be supporting Team Marky Mark for an Oscar, I would have told you you were insane. Beantown boy made good. I'm fully expecting Eddie Murphy to win it though. Not that I've seen Dreamgirls, so I can't really judge. I bet 10 years from now I will still be able to say I haven't seen Dreamgirls.
